Poisoning Alert!
It has come to our attention that many home improvement stores are selling a houseplant that can cause serious poisoning in pets and children. The plant is called the "Sago Palm" or "Cycad". It is also referred to as "The Oldest Known Plant". It is used in outdoor landscaping in Southern States, but can only survive as a houseplant in the North. All of this plant, including the seeds and root ball are toxic. Signs of illness first appear about 12 hours after ingestion and include gastrointestinal sign such as vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. The toxins in the plant lead to severe liver failure with progressive weakness, jaundice, bruising and bleeding and other signs of liver failure that lead to death. It is estimated that 75-80% of animals ingesting this plant will die in spite of aggressive medical treatment. If you have one of these plants in your home you will want to be sure to keep it away from pets and children, preferably by disposing of it safely in a covered trash can or "rehome" it with someone who does not have pets or young children in the household.

Your Help Needed to Strengthen New York's Animal Fighting Law

The current dogfighting law in New York is very weak, ranking in the bottom five states nationwide. This is because the possession of animals for fighting is only a misdemeanor, and being a spectator at an animal fight is only a traffic-ticket style violation. Legislation (A.B. 6287a) to make these a felony in New York has passed the Agriculture Committee and needs to get through the Codes Committee. This legislation will help law enforcement crack down on animal fighting.

Sheldon Silver is the Speaker of the Assembly and his support of A.B. 6287a is crucial to the bill passing. Speaker Silver needs to hear from concerned New Yorkers like you, who want stronger penalties for animal fighting.

TAKE ACTION Please take a moment today to call Speaker Silver at 518-455-3791 and urge him to pass A.B. 6287a to strengthen the animal fighting law in New York. Making a call is easy. When you call, you will speak to a staff member who will pass your message along to your legislator. Remember to leave your name and address so it is clear that you are a New York resident. You can say:

"Hello, my name is [your name] and I am calling from [your town] to ask Speaker Silver to support A.B. 6287a, and strengthen New York's animal fighting law. Thank you."

Thank you for your help at this critical time, and for all you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Mike Markarian Chief Operating Officer The Humane Society of the United States
