Teaching a Dog its Name

By Sass Levine, Thek9clubtraining.com

Teaching your dog to know his name is fun and easy. Remember to use his name in a positive way.. remember his name should be " music to his ears" The quickest way to teach is with a clicker and treats.

  • Buy a clicker online or at a pet supply store
  • Collect an assortment of treats to keep handy
  • Begin with you dog or puppy in a quiet room without distractions
  • Whenever your dog/puppy is NOT looking at you, say his name ONCE in a notably crisp voice
  • As soon as your dog/puppy turns to see what the noise was, CLICK and TREAT
  • REPEAT several times
  • Practice this game with your dog a few times a day.
  • You can add distractions after your dog is consistently responding in a quiet place first
  • Remember, your dog only needs to look at you when you say his name in order to get a Click/Treat
  • After a while, you will increase the duration of eye contact you require of your dog in order for him to get a Click/Treat
  • Once he is solid indoors, then you can practice the name game outside
  • Low distraction environments, then add more distractions
  • If you are unsuccessful, most chances you are trying to advance too fast. Try to do more repetitions in the previous steps and the dog proficient at them before increasing the level of difficulty again.
  • Once your dog responds to his name in different areas of the house inside and out, then you will no longer need to click/treat.
  • You can now move on to more games by first saying his name, then communicating what you'd like him to be doing.
