AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy refers to an exciting new AKC program designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. S.T.A.R .stands for Socialization,Training, Activity, and Responsibility . The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is an incentive program for loving dog owners who have taken the time to take their puppies through a basic training class. Training classes teach you how to best communicate with your puppy. Organized training classes also provide an opportunity for your dog to socialize with other dogs. In classes aimed at earning the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy distinction, youÕll be able to get information on all of your puppy-raising questions including housetraining, chewing, and the most effective way to teach practical skills such as coming when called. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy training is a natural lead into the AKC Canine Good Citizen® Program.

(CGC)Canine Good Citizen refers to the certification granted by the (AKC) American Kennel Club to qualified dogs, who have passed their CGC test. The AKC has created and oversees a program that inspires pet owners to be responsible for their dogÕs health and behavior. It identifies and rewards dogs that have the training and demeanor to be reliable family members as well as good-standing community members. A CGC certification ensures that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community because it is trained and conditioned to act mannerly in the home, in public places and in the presence of other dogs. This is a certification that tests dogs in simulated everyday situations in a relaxed atmosphere. In order to become a CGC dog, a dog must pass all 10 parts of the test. Dogs with CGCs are then listed with the AKC as a CGC dog and receive certificates, CGC ID cards, tags and patches. Evaluators for this program are listed on the AKC website by state, and must meet certain criteria as well. The Canine Good Citizen Test is offered at various dog shows and fundraisers. Unlike all other AKC programs this program embraces both pure-bred and mixed-breed dogs. Dogs may test at any age. The AKC is actively working on having the CGC test increase in its interest and lead to more access with your do. AKC also is working with home insurance companies to put an end to breed discrimination which now makes it difficult or impossible to get home insurance if you own certain breeds on their list. If this could change to allow dogs who have a CGC instead, it would demonstrate better temperament and reliability in behavior.
