Training Tips

SIMPLE as ABC!

By Sass Levine, TheK9club@aol.com

All Behavior Is Learned
and DRIVEN by the Consequence it Brings!

A - Antecedent B - Behavior C - Consequence

A stands for Antecedent and is basically what exhibits itself PRIOR to a behavior. Think of it as "what sets the stage" before the behavior demonstrates itself.

Examples: the bus came.. the ball flew by.. the doorbell rang.. a stranger approached, a squirrel ran by...

B stands for Behavior and simply is the presentation of action or mood, whether desirable or not.

Examples: jumping, barking, growling, trembling, running off, pulling, chasing or sitting and laying down quietly, walking nicely by your side, bringing back a ball that you threw to him...

C stands for Consequence, a response, which can be good, bad or neutral and is what happens immediately following a behavior. The consequence to a behavior is responsible for whether or not the behavior repeats or fades away.

Examples: treats, praise, door opened, ball was thrown, attention was given, food was found, a leash correction, an electric shock, harsh scolding, or perhaps nothing happened at all.. something very uninteresting.

Following these simple ABCs will help insure success in training.

Whenever you are ready to work with your dog, take the time to go over the specific ABCs that apply to the situation.

While training your dog, you will be doing one of these 2 things:

  • Observing an existing behavior and determining if you would like it to continue
  • Building a particular behavior that you'd like to see continue

Now ask yourself

  • "Is this a desirable behavior?"
In which case, you would continue on the same path allowing the A and C to remain intact.
  • "Is this an undesirable behavior?"
Then you will want to make changes and influence the A and C.

Since changing or influencing the A and the C will impact the B, then you will want to play close attention them both .

By manipulating the A and/or C, you will be able to zero in on specifically what B you'd like to see in the future!
